Description of Free Ball
First released with the UX-08 Silver Wolf 3-80FB Starter as part of the Xtreme Gear Sports Unique Line system on October 12th, 2024, Free Ball (or FB) is a stamina type Bit.
Free Ball, as its name suggests, is a variant of the popular Bit Ball, featuring an hemispherical tip, albeit slightly smaller than Ball. This “Free” variant rotates freely inside the Bey, unlike standard Bits. Usually, Bits have notches that players can easily feel while trying to rotate the Bit in an assembled Bey. Free Ball doesn’t have these notches, allowing it to freely rotate inside the Ratchet mechanism.
This gimmick is meant to make Xtreme Dash attacks more difficult to achieve. Since FB rotates freely, the absence of resistance usually created by the notches tends to prevent FB from triggering an Xtreme-Dash when the combination hits the X-Line. Therefore, when a Free Ball combination is pushed against the Xtreme Line, it tends to come back to the center part of the stadium instead of riding the X-Line.
While this gimmick may look counterintuitive at first glance, it is actually of great help, because Xtreme Dash attacks result in high stamina losses. Therefore, FB tends to prevent such stamina drainage to occur. However, the gimmick will not always work as intended : a FB combination can perform Xtreme Dash attacks at times, with various levels of velocity. Sometimes FB highly mitigates Xtreme Dash speed, at times it will create very fast Xtreme Dash attacks.
Overall, the gimmick proves to be efficient for stamina combinations. However, FB doesn’t necessarily outclass Ball because of its smaller tip. On the one hand, the smaller tip of FB creates less friction, thus resulting in higher stamina levels. On the other hand, less friction also makes a FB combination easier to knock-out than a B combo.
The smaller tip also makes Free Ball more docile than Ball, allowing players to keep the Beyblade inside the center part of the Stadium even when launched hard.
At the time of writing, our theory about Free Ball great synergy with Scorpio Spear seems to be confirmed, with the combination Scorpio Spear 9-60FB (exactly the one we recommended) having success in official B4 (Takara Tomy) tournaments.
Final Thoughts
While Ball remains the most popular stamina option, Free Ball can be considered as a must have for players looking for more competitive parts. Typically, competitive players aim to avoid the Xtreme Line/Xtreme Dash at all cost, Free Ball gives them a higher chance to do so.
