Description of Greatest Raphael

Greatest Raphael Over High Xtend+’ is a right-spin balance type combination featuring two gimmicks and a unique design. The layer of this combination cannot be customized, it is a single piece including the armor, the DB core and the blade. Therefore, Greatest Raphael does not feature the “normal” and “high” modes of the Dynamite Battle Beyblades.

Greatest Raphael Defense Mode

The first gimmick of Greatest Raphael is the “Defense Mode”, part of the “Overdrive System”. Raphael begins the battle in attack mode, with a plastic armor attached along its perimeter (the Greatest Armor). This armor is divided in two parts, one on each side of the blade, with each part of the armor featuring three pointy protrusions.

With a moderate launch, the armor will remain attached to the blade. With a hard launch, Greatest Raphael gimmick will be triggered : both parts of the armor will detach from the blade thanks to a built-in spring mechanism. Then, once the gimmick is activated, the armor slowly swings upward and transforms as the spin rotation drops, mimicking the “Glory Crown” special attack from the anime.

This is the “Defense Mode” of the combination, intended to create CWD (Center or Centralized Weight Distribution). In theory, this can increase the combination’s balance as the spin velocity decreases. With the armor lifted, the perimeter of the Beyblade will also change shape, going from a slightly agressive design with the pointy protrusions of the armor to a perfectly round and smooth perimeter.

Here is the “Defense Mode”

It is worth noting that this gimmick is a lot of fun for kids, and it is easy to activate even for young children if they are using a launcher such as the Full Custom Beylauncher LR.

The “Metal Burst Lock”

Greatest Raphael second gimmick is the “Metal Burst Lock”, also part of the “Overdrive System”. Just like the “Greatest Armor” gimmick, a hard launch is required. As the spin velocity of the combination decreases, two metal protrusions will gradually move to create resistance with the forge disc movement, which increases burst resistance.

Behavior and Performance

Intended to be a balance type combination, with the High Xtend+’ featuring three different modes, Greatest Raphael is at its best in stamina mode. The driver’s defense mode can be used in the DB standard arena, but both defense and attack modes are far too unpredictable to be used with efficiency and consistency in the Takara Tomy standard arena.

In stamina mode, this Beyblade is one of the strongest stock combinations of the Dynamite Battle and Burst Ultimate systems. Greatest Raphael Over High Xtend+’ is at its best in the DB Standard stadium in stamina mode. In the standard arena, this stock combo is still very strong but it will be struck more often and can be knocked-out with more consistency, due to the smaller size of the standard stadium.

This Beyblade has great stamina and LAD (Life After Death) potential, and it can be a great combo in opposite-spin battles. In “Defense Mode”, the perfectly round and smooth shape of the blade creates great spin-equalizing and LAD potential, making Greatest Raphael a real threat in many different match-ups.

However, the “Defense mode” can be stopped by the opponent. If the armor is struck it can be reattached to the layer during the battle, cancelling the activation of one or both parts of the “Greatest Armor”.
Furthermore, Greatest Raphael can be destabilized by low and thin blades, such as Prominence if the Prominence Shield is knocked off during battle.

How to Improve Greatest Raphael

FRIENDLY USE

In a friendly environment, Greatest Raphael Over High Xtend+’ is a very strong stock combination. With a layer that does not allow customization, we can only look at the forge disc and the performance tip. Those two components are both top-tier, highly competitive parts. Over is one of the best forge discs of the DB/BU systems and High Xtend+’ is a fantastic performance tip is stamina mode, featuring great LAD potential. However, you could try to take advantage of the spin-equalizing potential of the combination and replace High Xtend+’ with drivers such as Bearing’ or Drift. Mobius or Bearing Mobius can be used with the same purpose as well.

COMPETITIVE USE

The Greatest Raphael layer lacks weight and customization options to be considered top-tier in a competitive environment. However, if you don’t have many models at your disposal, this layer can be used in a spin-equalization combination, with the aforementioned performance tips (Bearing’, Drift, Mobius) and the Over forge disc.

If you have other models at your disposal, you can pick the Over forge disc and the High Xtend+’ performance tips and assemble them to a top-tier stamina layer of your choice. The Wind blade, Perseus DB core and the “0” armor can be used to create a competitive layer.
An example could be : Wind Perseus Over High Xtend+’-0.

Final Thoughts on Greatest Raphael

Greatest Raphael Over High Xtend+’ is a fantastic, strong stock combination, with great stamina and LAD potential. The “Greatest Armor” gimmick is fascinating for younger players, and this Beyblade is also the only way to get the highly competitive “High Xtend+’” performance tip. Competitive players will also have the “Over” forge disc to add to their collection of top tier components.

Therefore, Greatest Raphael is a must have in any player’s collection.
